PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Jonathan Toohill scored his first J & S Steel DIRTcar Sportsman victory at Airborne Speedway on Saturday.
Toohill and Chris Cayea battled side-by-side for the final five laps to decide the outcome. On the final lap, Cayea pulled ahead off of the second turn. Cayea had a narrow advantage entering the final two turns, but Toohill was rim riding on the cushion and launched off the top of turn four to pass Cayea at the line.
Cayea finished second, while Craig Wholey completed the podium. Tanner Forbes and Travis Bruno completed the top five.
The Hartson Total Opening Renegade feature hit the track and was getting ready to go green when the skies opened up and dumped on the speedway grounds.
More information will be available in the coming days about make-up features for the Renegades, Taylor Rental Street Stocks and Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman. Additionally, more information about the fireworks show will be announced as soon as it is available.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Dominant.
The only word to describe Jamy Begor’s impressive win after starting in position 14 for the J & S Steel Sportsman feature event at Airborne Speedway.
The winning pass was made on a lap-15 restart when Tanner Forbes and Begor squared off at the Northern Blacktopping Restart Zone. The two drivers were side-by-side through the first two turns, but Begor was rim-riding the top of turns three and four, where he eventually finished the pass and checked out.
Forbes had to settle for second, while Lonnie Rivers completed the podium. Fire Swamp and Joey Scarborough finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Shawn Duquette did the exact opposite in the Hartson Total Opening Renegade Feature, winning from the very bottom of the track.
Duquette was involved in a caution on the first lap, returned to the pit area and restarted at the tail end of the field. Duquette methodically picked off cars on the extreme inside en route to a comfortable victory, his second of the year.
Billy Thwaits was the apparent second place finisher, but the backup car that Thwaits ran in the feature didn’t pass post-race technical inspection. Richie Turner inherited second place, and Tylor Terry moved to third. Nathaniel Guay and Hunter Sawyer completed the top five.
The Taylor Rental Street Stock Feature pinned a see-saw battle for the lead in the final two laps.
A green-white-checkered finish decided the outcome with Jake Fountain and Josh Laporte Sr. on the front row. Laporte took the lead on lap-14 and maintained the lead until the final two turns when Fountain drove around the outside to his second win of the season.
Laporte Sr. finished in second, while Josh Blake finished in third after his first career win last week. Greg Zindler Jr. finished fourth and Mat Lavalley finished fifth.
Nate Leonard won for the second week in a row with the Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman division. Kobe Hernandez and Mat Lavalley completed the podium.

PLATTSBURGH — The 2023 racing season will take the green flag at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at Plattsburgh’s Airborne Speedway.
The DIRTcar Sportsman Series will invade the North Country with some of the top Sportsman competitors in the northeast battling for the $1,500 top prize.
A year ago, over 40 Sportsman drivers and teams signed into the garage area to compete in the 40-lap main event. Ontario Sportsman star, Shane Pecore took home the victory last season over Dave Rogers and Gabriel Cyr. Will the outsiders control the podium again this season, or will the Airborne J&S Steel Sportsman regulars defend their home territory?
In addition, the Hartson Total Opening Renegades, Taylor Rental Street Stocks and Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman will be in action for regular distance heat and feature races.
Stay tuned for more releases and information for the 2023 racing season at Airborne Speedway.

The Fourth of July celebration returns this season and will take place on Saturday, July 1. An exciting fireworks display will highlight an evening filled with action packed short track racing.

After two successful events with the 358 Modifieds a year ago, Airborne Speedway Management has committed to bringing back the division in a part time capacity.

All the events will also count to the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Points as well."
After last season’s 358 Modified show, many of the competitors were contacting the speedway to do more with the division going forward. The Management team at Airborne has been in contact with several drivers who are excited about the opportunity to return to Airborne in 2023.
